Babe! An Olympian Musical
Babe: An Olympian Musical is set in the 1930’s through 1950’s and depicts the life of Mildred “Babe” Didrikson, a standout athlete at the 1932 Summer Olympics and one of the first women pro golfers. This is the first full-book, full-chorus musical about women athletes, starring a butch female lead and featuring a lesbian love story.
The book and lyrics are by Carolyn Gage, the author of seventy-five plays, who specializes in non-traditional roles for women—especially those reclaiming famous lesbians whose stories have been distorted or erased from history. The score is by Andrea Jill Higgins, noted composer, musical director, pianist, and teacher.
Presented as part of the Night Stage lineup at the 42nd National Women’s Music Festival, July 6 – 9, 2017, this performance will feature a pit orchestra and women’s chorus, and all roles will be performed by women. This musical will feature limited staging but the full score and complete book.
Pays a stipend, plus shared hotel accommodations and meals.
Reprising their roles from the Arizona State University Lyric Opera Theatre reading are Alexandra Wood as Babe and Melanie Holm as her sister Lillie.
